Who can answer Mary's questions?
This film is based on a true story. The Griffith family is headed by its matriarch, Mary Griffith. She has very strong religious convictions. Rather like Tywin Lannister’s family in Game of Thrones, Mary’s family must sacrifice their lives to satisfy her ambitions. Her ambitions, or rather, her ONE ambition, is that the entire family be re-united in heaven upon their deaths. This can only happen if they lead sin-free lives on earth. When Mary discovers that her younger son is gay i.e. is sinning, then this threatens her ambitions for her family’s afterlife. She therefore sets out to cure her son of his sins. Tragedy ensues, leading Mary on a search for answers. Is there any way that her son can be absolved of his sins? Thus, once so sure of her religious beliefs, once so confident in her certainty that religion holds all the answers, Mary learns the hard way that religious beliefs are open to interpretation. She becomes distraught. And, basically, that is the larger problem under scrutiny here i.e. that religion does not provide certainty, does not, cannot, provide the answers to life’s issues. And what a great deal of strife that failure creates. Would Mary have fared better had she sought the answers she so desperately needed in philosophy? No. Philosophy has failed to provide any answers at all, or, rather, is littered with competing theories about the nature of existence. Being unable to provide answers, it has retreated into the position of claiming that questions are more important than answers. Philosophy’s stance, is, of course, nonsense. People NEED answers to their questions about existence and about how best to live their lives. So, what about science? Can it provide answers? In a word: no. By its own admission, science cannot prove any theory to be true. Scientific methods can only prove a theory to be false. Scientists claim, however, that they are getting more right, getting closer to answers, as time goes on. This, too, is nonsense. How can science get closer to the truth when it has never provided any truths in its entire existence? Thus, neither can science provide people with the truths about life they so desperately seek. No wonder the world is in the state it is in. People e.g. philosophers, scientists, even politicians, as well as some families that I know, may hoodwink us into believing they have the answers, hoodwink us into believing that they have it all sussed, when in reality, they too are floundering in dark waters, no better off than the rest of humanity. What an impasse. Speaking personally, I find it better by far to rely on personal experience to tell me what to do. Thus, I ignore all the dietary advice offered by science. In other words, I consume salt, fats and sugar because they all make my food taste better. (What is the point of living if there is nothing left to enjoy?) Furthermore, I trust in my body to tell me if or when to alter my diet. Alcohol is my drug of choice; I have not taken anti-biotics or pain-killers i.e. any prescription or over-the-counter drugs, for over 15 years. Indeed, when I last saw a doctor, nearly 20 years ago, I actually went against his advice concerning my health and my recovery was subsequently very quick. (This was a recurring condition which was otherwise threatening to become chronic.) As to global warming, it may or may not be happening. I keep an open mind about that and do not believe it just because scientists tell me it is true. (As I said, what does science finally know about truth?) In fact, relying on myself rather than on "experts" has been a very liberating experience.
Purple, But Important.
DVD was in fine working order. As for the movie itself, I feel it's a movie many should watch - a great conversation starter about broader topics that many may not have an easy way to approach. The movie, while very much Lifetime-esque in many ways, is carried by a powerhouse performance by Sigourney Weaver, who plays Bobby's mother. Even when you don't agree with her (which, sometimes, is abhorrently so) you can never deny that she believes her heart is in the right place. I'm certain that had the role been carried by a lesser actor, the film could have been considered trite and forgettable. The performances of other cast members do stand their own ground in most respects, but the viewer - I believe - is always left waiting for the next part of Ms. Weaver's stern, occasionally infuriating, but ultimately heart-wrenching performance of a mother who doesn't know where to turn. I should also state that I don't believe this film is strictly for LGBT+ in any way, although for very obvious reasons, it has become popular for many trying to open up a line of conversation with less than accepting parents. As stated, the movie is a great conversation starter - both LGBT+ wise, as well as to the question of where is the line when morals and faith differ, and what do you do when you cross it? A solid movie with an exceptional performance - and a Speech scene, followed by an epilogue seen, that should leave even the hardest hearts at least a little bit teary eyed - and rightfully so! I definitely recommend!
Quite moving.
Set in a city in the West of US, this story revolves around an ultra-religious family whose youngest son (late teens) announces he is gay. He is cruelly rejected by the mother ( so well played by Sigourney Weaver) that he leaves home for Portland. So depressed does he become by the rejection, he eventually commits suicide. The remainder of the film centers on the playing out of his mother's guilt, with her finally admitting to a church minister that her views drove him to taking his own life. Powerful scenes in parts, the movie script taking the opportunity of highlighting that the Bible was written by men whose views and standards were very much of their time, and not so relevant in the 21stC. As others have written in reviews, be prepared in parts of this film for tears to sting your eyes.

Keeping spirituality simple
I purchased this as a 'companion' to my journaling Bible, to give a more comprehensive picture of my spiritual journey. The design of 'The Prayer Map' is simple and feminine, suitable for a teen or adult. The sections are small enough to not fill one with dread but big enough to express one's self in a few short sentences. The paper quality looks and feels great too. Can't wait to use this book to take my spiritual life to the next level in 2019!
I definitely recommend
I loved! Really useful!
What I’ve been looking for, a wonderful prayer journal!
It’s a simplistic but beautiful prayer journal. This book has enhanced my prayer time with the Lord. I like that it is a small journal so I can take it with me everywhere. I found that I have enough space to write down my prayers, but if you have big handwriting then the spaces might be too small. This is a wonderful prayer journal for me.
